SQL Server 2008 was released in August of 2008. SQL Server 2008 was basically a part of a joint launch of Windows Server 2008 and Visual Studio 2008. Date and Time data types:

The following describes the new date and time data types.
Date: date data types in SQL 2008 supports date range 1/1/1 to 31/12/9999.
Time: The time data type stores time values only with date range 00:00:00.0000000 through 23:59:59.9999999.
datetime2: combines date and time.
Datetimeoffset:
This data type includes all the features of datetime2 with an additional time zone offset.
 
Support FILESTREAM storage:
SQL Server 2008 introduces the FILESTREAM storage attribute for binary data stored in a varbinary(max) column. This allows you to store the data on the local NTFS file system instead of in the database file.
 
Data compression and Backup Compression:
In SQL server 2008 include data compression techniques to reduce the storage requirements for your data. Data compression also provides significant performance improvements for large data.
And now SQL server 2008 enterprise and later edition including developer edition supports back compression and give the option to user to resote the database from compressed back up.
 
Full-Text Search capability:
SQL Server 2008 full-text search introduces a new full-text architecture. Full-text search is now a fully integrated feature of a database.
 
Wide Tables:
Wide tables are tables that contain one or more column sets. A wide table can contain up to 30000 columns, 1000 indexes, and 30000 statistics.
 
hierarchyid Data Type:
SQL Server 2008 introduces a new system-provided data type to encapsulate hierarchical relationships.
 
Security Enhancements:
SQL Server 2008 also enhance the security features such as transparent data encryption, auditing, and the extensible key management features, and a clarification of DES algorithms.

Increase performance and automatic data recovery from Corrupted Pages:
