A new report claims Microsoft has decided to release a app version of Office for iPad early next year.
Microsoft plans to release Office Mobile in the form of free apps that will allow Android and iOS users to view Microsoft Office documents on the on their respective mobile devices.
Similar to the existing SkyDrive and OneNote apps, Office Mobile will also require a Microsoft account authetication.
Word, PowerPoint, and Excel documents will all be supported, but for edit functionality for editing all these documents users will have to purchase an Office 365 subscription.
Microsoft will allow iOS users to purchase an Office 365 subscription from within the app, or let organizations distribute codes to enable Office Mobile editing for users. The apps will just allow basic editing of these documents.
According to the rumors, Office Mobile apps for Android and iOS would be made available from March 2013. Office Mobile for iOS will arrive first in late February or early March, with an Android version due in May.
